UK Solar Grants and Incentives in 2026

The 0% VAT, the £14,000 ECO4 grant, the 15p export tariff, and the SAP 92 stamp-duty rebate. Every UK solar incentive in one place.

UK Solar Grants and Incentives in 2026

UK solar in 2026 benefits from one of the most generous incentive frameworks in the country's history. There is no single grant — instead, a stack of complementary schemes that, taken together, can reduce out-of-pocket cost by 40-100% for eligible households.

0% VAT — the universal incentive

The most valuable solar incentive applies to every household. Since April 2022, solar panels, batteries, and most associated equipment have been zero-rated for VAT. On a typical £7,200 install, this saves £1,440 vs the standard 20% rate.

Confirmed in the Spring 2025 Budget to continue until at least 31 March 2027. The Treasury is consulting on a permanent extension; industry response is overwhelmingly supportive.

ECO4 and GBIS — for lower-income households

ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation, fourth phase) requires the largest energy suppliers to fund energy-efficiency improvements in low-income and vulnerable households. Solar PV is eligible when bundled with insulation. Average grant value 2025-26: £11,400; maximum £14,000.

Eligibility: receiving means-tested benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, ESA, JSA, Working Tax Credit) OR property in council tax band A-D AND household income below £31,000. Some local authorities also self-fund 'ECO Flex' top-ups extending eligibility.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Every large energy supplier (>150,000 customers) must offer an SEG tariff. Rates in 2026 range from 3.9p (British Gas) to 24p (Octopus Outgoing Fixed). For a typical 6 kWp install exporting 2,400 kWh/yr, the best tariff returns £576/yr vs £94/yr on the worst.

You don't need to be an import customer of your SEG provider; export-only contracts are common. Switch SEG provider annually to chase the best rate — no exit fees apply.

Stamp duty rebate (SAP 92+)

From October 2024, properties achieving SAP 92 (EPC A) qualify for a 4% stamp duty rebate on the next sale. For a £400,000 property, that's £16,000 — frequently more than the cost of the solar + insulation work required to achieve the rating.

The rebate transfers to the property, not the homeowner. Even if you don't sell, the work improves the asking price by an average 14% per Nationwide's 2025 analysis. Net: solar makes financial sense even before counting bill savings.

Less well-known schemes

Home Energy Scotland Loan: interest-free loans up to £6,000 for solar, £6,000 for batteries — Scotland-only, no income test.

Nest Wales: grant of up to £10,000 for solar + insulation packages for low-income Welsh households.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme adjacent benefit: properties installing heat pumps frequently package solar at the same time, qualifying for both the BUS grant (£7,500) and stacked solar incentives.

Local authority schemes: 38 UK councils ran local solar grant programmes in 2025; most underwrite £500-£2,000 per household. Check your council's environmental services page.

Frequently asked questions

Q.Do I qualify for ECO4?

A.If you receive means-tested benefits, almost certainly yes. Otherwise, check the income + council tax band criteria.

Q.Is the 0% VAT rate permanent?

A.Confirmed until 31 March 2027. The Treasury is consulting on a permanent extension.

Q.Can I claim multiple grants?

A.Yes — 0% VAT applies to all eligible installs. ECO4, GBIS, and SEG are stackable in most cases.

Q.What's the most generous local scheme?

A.Home Energy Scotland's interest-free loan covers up to £12,000 with no income test — by some distance the best deal in the UK.
