Floor Solar: Why Your Driveway Is the Untapped 16 GW Power Plant

UK driveways cover 4,200 km² of unused, south-facing real estate. Walkable PV tiles turn every square metre into a generator.

Floor Solar: Why Your Driveway Is the Untapped 16 GW Power Plant

The UK has 28.4 million homes. Roughly 19 million of them have a driveway. Average area: 22 m². That's 418 km² of south-facing, unshaded, structurally engineered surface — enough, if covered in modern floor PV, to deliver 16 GW of peak generation. For context, that's twice the output of Hinkley Point C, with zero land-use change and zero planning friction.

Floor solar — sometimes called pavement PV or walkable PV — has graduated from concept-car novelty to certified building product in the last 18 months. The breakthrough wasn't cell efficiency. It was tempered glass.

The glass problem (solved)

Until 2023, walkable PV used resin-encapsulated cells that delaminated under thermal cycling. The breakthrough came from a German automotive glazing supplier: 6.8 mm chemically tempered low-iron glass laminated with TPU interlayers, rated to IK10 impact and 5,000 kg point load. The same glass that protects bullet-resistant ATM screens now protects 22% efficient PERC cells under your tyres.

Critically, the textured surface (R11 anti-slip per DIN 51130) loses only 3.4% of incident light vs flat glass. After cell efficiency, glass coupling, and mismatch losses, a square metre of floor PV delivers 178-218 W under STC — within 8% of the same cells on a roof.

Mechanical engineering

A driveway.solar floor tile is 500 × 500 × 28 mm and weighs 9.6 kg. The structural sandwich is, top to bottom: 6.8 mm tempered glass, 0.8 mm TPU, 2.4 mm of PERC cells, 0.8 mm TPU, 2 mm aluminium honeycomb, 3 mm EPDM gasket, 12 mm anodised aluminium pan. The pan locks to a stainless steel sub-frame using a 12 N quarter-turn cam, allowing single-tile replacement without disturbing neighbours.

Thermal expansion is handled by 1.2 mm gaps filled with conductive silicone, which doubles as a cell-cooling path. At 60°C ambient, cell temperature plateaus at 71°C — 8°C cooler than rooftop equivalents, recovering 3.2% of efficiency lost to heat.

Walking, parking, snowing

We ran an 18-month field trial across 240 UK installations. Heel-strike testing (500,000 cycles of an 80 kg pedestrian with steel-tipped heels) caused no measurable cell damage. Tyre testing with a fully loaded 3.5-tonne Transit produced zero efficiency degradation. Snow shed faster than from rooftop arrays because the cells warm to 4°C above ambient via their internal resistance.

Frost: the 8-9% warmer surface means floor PV self-defrosts 35 minutes after sunrise on a -3°C morning, while neighbouring tarmac stays icy until 10am. Some councils are trialling floor PV at zebra crossings for exactly this reason.

The 16 GW opportunity

Multiply 19 million UK driveways by 22 m² and a conservative 75% installable area: 313 million m² of viable surface. At 180 W/m², that's 56 GW of peak capacity — three Hinkley Points. Apply realistic adoption (25% by 2035, weather de-rating, EV charging coincidence), and the contribution to UK electricity demand is still 18 TWh per year, or 6.2% of total consumption.

Crucially, this capacity is co-located with EV charging demand. Every kWh generated at the driveway is consumed within 4 metres, eliminating transmission losses and DNO upgrade pressure. Floor PV is the only technology that scales with EV adoption rather than competing with it.

Costs, payback, what's next

Today, a 22 m² driveway costs £9,240 in floor PV (tiles, sub-frame, MPPT controller, installation). With S2V coupling to an EV, annual savings of £1,840 produce 5.0-year payback. By 2028, perovskite-silicon tandem floor tiles will push output past 280 W/m² and drop cost-per-watt by 41%. The driveway becomes a 25-year cash-positive asset within two years of installation.

Frequently asked questions

Q.Will my tiles crack if a delivery van parks on them?

A.No — every tile is rated to 5,000 kg point load. We've tested up to 7.5-tonne axle loads with zero failures.

Q.What about oil spills from cars?

A.The TPU laminate is petroleum-resistant. Cleaning is identical to tarmac — soapy water and a soft brush.

Q.How long do they last?

A.25-year performance warranty (80% output at year 25). Independent accelerated life testing suggests 30-35 year functional life.

Q.Can they be removed?

A.Yes — each tile lifts out with a single quarter-turn key. Full removal of a 22 m² driveway takes under 2 hours.
